Static Protection
for High Bandwidth
Sampling Oscilloscopes

The picosecondATE Model 1201 and 1202 Static Protection Units are designed to protect high-bandwidth sampling oscilloscopes from static damage in applications involving TDR of passive devices such as circuit boards and coaxial cables.

The Static Protection Unit is connected between the signal probe and the input of the oscilloscope needing protection. It discharges any static charge that the probe encounters, then upon command, connects the probe to the oscilloscope for normal measurement use.

Inside, any charge encountered by the probe is shorted to ground through a microwave switch. When the operator actuates the foot switch supplied with the unit, the microwave switch connects the probe input to the oscilloscope, enabling a measurement to be made.

This is a direct method of discharging the device-under-test before the oscilloscope is connected to it. Other methods of controlling static such as grounding, resistive mats, and ion generators hopefully discharge the area or the air, but not necessarily the contact that needs attention. This device removes the charge from the area that represents the hazard.
